I went to Øya festivalen in Oslo on Thursday and Friday, and got to see some great gigs:
Shabazz Palace - Got to hear a couple of tunes by them, and I really liked it, but my girlfriend wanted to see Fleet Foxes, so I joined her
Fleet Foxes - I have seen them once before, and I'm not a big fan. I found them a bit boring, at least live. Happily for me, my girlfriend agreed and we went to see Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae 10/10 - One of the best gigs I've been to in quite a while, she was on fire and her band gave it their all.
Explosions in the Sky - Last time I went to see them a couple of years ago, they cancelled. Back then I was a pretty big fan, but my interest in this genre isn't what it used to be. They actually were pretty good, but I left a couple songs early to go to Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin 9/10 - Great lightshow and a fantastic mix, brought in elements from his entire career and it was always highly entertainting, challenging and unpredictable.
Friday:
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart 5/10: I quite liked their first album, well at least I really liked "Contenders". I do like Field Mice quite a bit, and I'm always suprised how similar TPOBPAH sounds. Both sound best in small doses, and TPOBPAH really sounds like a tribute band at times.
The Jayhawks 8/10
Really enjoyable show, really like the Jayhawks and "The Salvation Blues" by Mark Olson is one of my favourite albums in the last years. Great to see them back togheter and they played a mostly greatest hits show, with some new tracks mixed in. I didn't know they are about to release a new album, and by the sound of it, it might be really good. The harmonies between Louis and Olson still sounds magical after all these years.
Montee 7/10: Norwegian pop band, great choruses and uplifting pop music. Wish the sound would have been better, but it did get better later in the gig.
Pulp 10/10: I didn't reallt know what to expect, but they blew me and everyone else away. It sounded like they were the most relevant band in the world, with Jarvis being in top form. Hearing "This is Hardcore" live was a highligt, and the only critisism I got is that they should have played a couple more from that record.

Saw the mighty Lee Mavers last night with our Dutch prince Jorn and it was like a dream come true. A tight as shit show, even though we didn't get to hear any Kitchen Tape songs. I can die in peace now. 11/10

Thurston Moore - not a big sonic youth fan at the best of times, but I went, since he was on before Levon Helm on another stage, and it was in a tent and it was cold. Interesting show, read a few poems, played nothing but 12-string acoustic...it was all kind of samey, but still ok. 6/10
Levon Helm - his band is great, but he's in pretty rough shape. Only sang 'ophelia' and a verse of 'the weight', but singing is stretching it...his voice was barely audible. He still drums like a mother, and he seemed in good shape otherwise, but still...pretty sad that one of rock's great voices has been pretty much silenced. 7/10

Saw Toots & the Maytals at the Glasgow Academy on Thursday, they were brilliant. Toots is a proper legend. Dressed head to toe in leather, moved about the stage like a man half his age. The band were smoking. Monkey Man got the entire venue dancing. Finished with a 10 min version of this Easy 8 outta 10. Go see them if you can.

Wooden Shjips @ the Scala, the neet
Throughout the gig, I felt really pleasantly stoned off my tits. I hadn't smoked anything all night. It was a great feeling.
Lovely.

Been a couple of big Sundays for me, gig-wise.
A couple of weeks ago when out with the Mrs in the afternoon I quite literally stumbled across a bunch of people setting up a free warehouse gig. I decided to hang around. First up were Glasgow four-piece GROPETOWN who I can only describe as a thrash punk band with a bird screaming incomprehensibly over the top. 7. The police arrived shortly after, but all credit to them, didn't break up the party, which meant I got to see the frankly incredible Francis Harold & the Holograms from Arizona. Fronted by a fat guy wearing a dirty raincoat, pushing people about as he wails over a hard rock trio wearing hooded capes. Powerful doesn't come near it. 8.
found a vid of the gig on the promoter's website - gig of the year tbh.
Sunday just there went to Electric Frog, a festival of sorts held outdoors at the SWG3 (but under cover thankfully, as it was pissing down). Errors were decent but more suited to a club, The Fall were as enjoyable as always, MES was sober more or less, but didn't seem interested at all. Bury Pts 1&6 sounded massive as ever. Missed most of Wild Beasts cos I was at the bar, returned to the action to see Mogwai, who were brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Never been overly familiar with them apart from their debut but definitely need to check out more. 9.

josh t pearson at norwich arts centre tonight
was pretty amazing musically, could watch him play guitar all day long and the songs are beautiful with this being even more apparent live. he did spent probably at least half the set telling jokes though and giving out rubbish banter which was a refreshing break from the heavy going songs but went on a bit too long at times. still thoroughly recommend people to see him though if he plays near you.
8.5/10

Nice, I'm really excited to see him. Think it's quite far away but maybe not. Is a saturday anyway which should be sweet.
His record is one of the best things I've heard all year. It's by no means an easy listen, I've put it on when I've not been in the mood & hated it then another time it's blown me away. Special, unique record, could well be a classic in a few years to come.

THREE TRAPPED TIGERS Seams Binary Toad Jazzhands Alpha Male Tea Party
liverpool last night, £8. missed the first band as I was having a catch up with a bird I'd not seen in months. Jazzhands are a wierd student band with 3 drummers, bass and saxophone, they make a massive racket and its pretty exhilarating. Binary Toad is a lad I know, makes electronic music, his stuff is very good, however its boring to see someone on stage with a laptop. Seams is the same, his music is fucking brilliant though (I've put the latest single in the turtle) THREE TRAPPED TIGERS have torn shit up each time I've seen them, possibly the best live band in the country right now. 8/10 overall.
going to a club after with pints for £1.80: 10/10
