Arctic Monkeys @ The O2
I saw the Arctic Monkeys in <I don't actually know the year> when they played Chinarys in Southend. The gig was infront of 298 Essex based scenesters and me and The Maze. I remember they annoyed me on various levels as they came across a bit arrogant. Even before the first single was released they knew they were the shit and they knew it was going to be Beatlemania every gig that year. Looking back you can hardly blame them as they were like 17/18 and had they world at their fingers. They were also the fucking bollox.
Fast forward <so many years> and the Arctic Monkeys are a very different band. They are now a proper arena rock band. Even though they mix the set list up each gig, play b-sides and mess around with the syntax of the hits (no idea if that last bit makes sense) they still are a well oiled machine.
I saw Wu Lyf earlier in the week and they came across as being NOW. Being IMPORTANT and of the moment. The Arctic Monkeys don't but as the world needs young spunky bands like Wu Lyf to fuck about it it also needs arena rock bands like Arctic Monkeys to play in front of twenty thousand people and send them all home happy especially now Oasis are dead. If they don't, really, who will?
They gig lacked any kind of defining moment but they tossed out so many hits and tunes who is really to complain? It was merely good but I can't think of anyone else who could play the O2 and defintely deliver like the Monkeys would.
They should really play Cornerstone though.
The Vaccines supported and inspired a lot of fist pumping. I fucking love The Vaccines.
7/10

I'll only ever return to the 02 for the roses. I must of been smashed beyond belief the first time I went to of had a good night. Felt like I was trapped in an airport.

PJ Harvey @ Royal Albert Hall last night Near enough a ton for 2 tickets and 7 quid for a plastic glass of lukewarm wine nothwithstanding, this was fucking awesome. Polly Jean's first non-sung words were a pre-encore mutter of "Thanks very much, goodnight". Luckily her sung words were earth-shatteringly good. I've not heard heard a better vocal at a gig. I was watching her and realised my jaw was open. The missus had tears running down her face, although she is on the blob. The acoustics were wonderful as expected and bar some embarrassing nobheads in the crowd, it was a magic evening up to it's conclusion. What was noticeable is how much better the Let England Shake songs sound, a real songwriting step up, framing the strong, sinewy concept. Phenomenal, really. 9/10 also, never seen so many gay couples at a gig

Saturday went arctic monkeys @ the 02 Been there before when I was very very drunk and thought it was ok. Wasn't as drunk this time & hated every single minute. Them and the vaccines were both good but I wished I' hadn't gone I couldn't enjoy it. It's not me being a dick with a anti arena attitude either it was just everything about the place sucked the enjoyment out the night for me. Will only return for the roses, neil young or tom waits. Nobody else could make me go there. Sunday I saw Ringo Deathstarr @ The Lexington. This was the bollocks. was a bit weird at first, like revisiting the scene of the crime after the dustins gig, kept getting flashbacks of shit that went down anyway over the past 2/3 years I've stopped seeing 'new bands' or at least bands that play tiny venues, everything i see now is 20 quid plus which is shit. I enjoyed this gig so much and reminded me of why I used to enjoy seeing smaller scale bands so much. Everything was no hassle. Lexington is really nice too, downstairs was really chilled out, great music, nice people. Ringo Deathstarr were superb as well I really love that new record. Top band Last night Noel @ roundhouse. Most horrible, useless bunch of dickheads I've ever seen at a gig. Seriously everyone was static until wonderwall when they all decided to get their camera phones out. I really enjoyed half the world away and talk tonight, they were the type of Oasis songs Noel should of done. Supersonic made me cringe big time & I fucked off during little by little cos I'd had enough of everybody around me. The good rebel was the bollocks, biggest song ever & that manky teeth whatever the fuck it's called sounds better than anything on his album. Enjoyed it despite the crowd, it just reminded me of what a bunch of weird people Oasis fans are. I'd take the beered up piss throwing racist crowds over what I got stuck with last night. So basically, I should stop going to big gigs cos I am a miserable cunt.

You could tell it was over when everyone stood there like eggs during Mucky Fingers.
Still Good Rebel, Talk Tonight and Half The World Away were good.

So basically, I should stop going to big gigs cos I am a miserable cunt. exactly the reasons i suspected to stay away from these 2 gigs. there were quite a few annoying twats for pj harvey at RAH but the material and performance was so strong and the venue so great that it overcame it easily. camera phones at gigs are despicable. i can fully understand taking a photo or a quick vid clip for the sake of memory, i wish i did it at more gigs, but to just have them out recording whole songs and taking pics from every angle...i don't fucking get it. what's the fun in taking yourself so far out of the moment?

some people just live their life through photos though, don't they. there's always someone who on a night out will spend literally the entire time taking pictures, to remind themselves what a great time they had even though they missed it all.

Stocky, that girl is amazing. I saw them maybe 2 years ago as a 4-piece and they are so much better now yet I don't remember her being so fucking hot. She wears the shortest skirts I've ever seen. I was pretending I was Kevin Burgess and having a good look at 'the pedals' which is quite ironic as Kev would of jizzed everywhere as I've never seen a band use so fucking many of them. If you've not heard them their album from this year Color Trip I think you'd like. I call them the pains of being my bloody mary chain as they've no sound of their own but they sound convincingly like all 3 of those bands at times.

The camera phone epidemic is totally out of control these days. Pretty sure I watched at least half of the beady eye show in toronto through the person in front of me's viewfinder.

Yeah I've got the album, it's terrific, like baggy shoegaze. Unfortunately I got into them just after they played Manchester in August. But after seeing her pics on facebook i'm contemplating getting a ticket to see them supporting the smashing pumpkins at the apollo. Which incidentally is a great venue for upskirts.
