'shit season' is harsh, as is 'brainless'. he's got a way to go, but in the formation england probably look best in, who else would you pick on the right hand side? at his best, he can invent the game from moment to moment and beat his man with decent regularity. considering we are too defensively unsure to go with gung-ho fullback play, i'd rather have sterling probing further up the pitch. i mean, andros townsend has been very good for newcastle and scored a couple of cracking goals for england, but he is so fucking predictable (cut in on left, twat ball hard) that any decent international defender could pin him down easier than sterling (over the course of 90 minutes at least, i can see his value as a sub after 70 mins or so) i like lallana, especially under klopp, but he's a flicky, continuity player and i can't see that formation working to his strengths. barkley has worse decision making. james milner would be a bit of a trudge on the wings. Why is shit season harsh? He's gone backwards at City. I would play Barkley in a 3 behind Kane, all day every day. Barkley, Alli and Rooney. We don't need pace out wide with Clyne/Walker and Rose bombing forward and overlapping. 3 creative players who can see/pick a pass and are interchangeable. With Wilshere also getting forward when necessary.

Plus, he's never performed for England.
I agree with you about Townsend though. Never international class, despite a couple of decent early goals.
Townsend/Sterling/Walcott all interchangeably shit.

Plus, he's never performed for England. he was the best player on the pitch vs. italy in the last world cup

Barkley hasn't had the greatest second half of the season, but i think that's symptomatic more of Everton's season as a whole (Stone's and Lukaku have also faded badly), but on his day I think Barkley is as good as anyone in the England set-up and as Born Slippy said further up, his best form seems to come with England.
As far as occupying the same space- yeah it would require some discipline to avoid that, but from what's i've seen, Rooney is pretty good at that (holding to the left) and you'd like to think his experience would help the other two. But perhaps you're right. I just don't think Sterling is a better option.
TBH though, Roy likes a solid, dependable player, so we should expect to see either Milner or Henderson starting.

yeah henderson is the biggest worry for me. big fan of roy as england manager, in that he has removed a lot of the bullshit and bluster from engrrrrland, learnt as he has gone along and i think is underappreciated with his bravery of squad choices...but he fucking loves henderson and i have never seen him be half decent for england.

Plus, he's never performed for England. he was the best player on the pitch vs. italy in the last world cup So he's had one good game (in 21 games), two years ago in a game we lost. Walcott scored a hat-trick against Croatia. Get him in!

i wasn't using that example to suggest we should start him, more a response to you saying he hasn't had a good game for england.
also, walcott was 8 years ago, vs 2 for sterling. in a qualifier vs an actual world cup game.

Townsend & Drinkwater out of the England squad:
Thought that Townsend would have at least given a decent option off the bench. Henderson looked dreadful against Australia so I don't really see what he's going to offer. Good for Rashford to make it in though I'll be surprised if he sees any action.
Reus out of Germany squad:
Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)
Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Emre Can (Liverpool), Jonas Hector (Cologne), Benedikt Hoewedes (Schalke 04), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Shkodran Mustafi (Valencia), Antonio Ruediger (Roma)
Midfielders: Julian Draxler (VfL Wolfsburg), Sami Khedira (Juventus), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Lukas Podolski (Galatasaray), Andre Schurrle (VfL Wolfsburg), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Manchester United), Julian Weigl (Borussia Dortmund).
Forwards: Mario Gomez (Besiktas), Mario Goetze (Bayern Munich), Leroy Sane (Schalke 04)
