1990 WC semi final was much, much worse. My first summer drinking with my pals aged 16. Vomited profusely after that game and the Cameroon quarter-final.

Surely last night's friendly told us:
- Drop Rooney, he ruins our shape and momentum (this wont happen) - Only play Vardy in a 2 man strikeforce - Sterling is our only natural winger, we have to play him - Width should be provided by him and our fullbacks (who are very good going forward), not by strikers who scored almost 50 goals between them in the league - Dier and Wilshere should start but I don't know how they play together in a diamond
Frustrating.

...........Hart............
Walker...Smalling...Cahill...Rose
.......Dier....Wilshere.........
Sterling.................Lallana
...........Alli................
............Kane...............
Would be an option. Putting a lot of onus on Kane to get the goals though, as Sterling and Lallana can't really shoot.

i fully agree with baz's team. would have had clyne over walker but thought walker did really well yesterday and probably deserves a start against russia.
i'm surprised by the lack of people wanting wilshere to start. if he's fit, which he is at the moment, he is one of our most dynamic players. a must start for me.

Disagree with most of this. Rooney starts, but not with Vardy. A lot has been made of this team playing the Tottenham way, so set them up like that. Rooney starts on the left as one of three behind Kane. Alli as the 10, AN Other on the right (still think Barkley). You HAVE to have Rooney in this team, not only for his experience, but particularly because of it. Alli needs a nudge from time to time. Rooney was that hot headed young player with bundles of talent but a temper that was easily wound up. Having Rooney alongside him will help Alli no end. I'd go as far to say that with Rooney alongside him, Alli could go on to be one of the players of the tournament. I think Woy recongises this. Sterling might be our only natural winger, but he's also shit. We don't need natural wingers with the attacking full backs overlapping. We need clever players who will hold it up and slip the full backs in on the overlap. Rooney and Barkley are those clever players. Kane and Vardy doesn't work. So drop one of them. Vardy would be better as an impact sub. Fuck know's what Lallana is supposed to offer. I've not seen enough of Liverpool this season to fully judge him though. Wilshere and Dier to start together with Wilshere obvs the more attacking minded of the two linking defence and attack. I LOVE the look of Wilshere and Alli in the same team and reckon they can storm this tournament if he stays fit.

I LOVE the look of Wilshere and Alli in the same team and reckon they can storm this tournament if he stays fit. i really really really do not understand why we HAVE to play rooney in this team. he doesn't stick to a position and destroys the shape around him. he keeps dropping back and hitting diagonals to the channels. both wilshere and alli could do this from their positions, and with more consistency and variety. rooney is predictable, leaden-footed and ponderous nowadays, and his years of experience appear to amount to no tactical discipline whatsoever. lallana will not score or assist many. but he will provide cohesion from midfield to attack, allowing wilshere and alli to create and punch holes. and under klopp, he has a bigger engine too. sterling came on, england looked much more threatening, and he assisted the winning goal. i think that's 4 in his last 5 for england now. and he isn't just a wide player, he's also looked excellent at the tip of a diamond so allows us flexibility if we bring on 2 up top.

I would say other than the assist (he had SO much time and room that I could've dinked an accurate ball in) Sterling didn't particularly impress last night. I thought Wilshere made the difference.
Rooney should play for the reasons suggested above. He's a talisman, our all time record scorer who still scores, knows the game better than anyone on the pitch, is the captain, has all the experience and will keep the young more impetuous players (Alli and Wilshere in particular- two players in his own image) in check.

Agree entirely (with Baz) about Rooney.
Won't happen though, Hodgson has made such a big deal about making Rooney Mr England. It's ridiculous that we're still shoehorning him in the team. Our best chance for fucking years and it's going to be ruined by managerial ineptitude.
Sterling and Lallana on current form aren't perfect as wide attackers but at least they can fucking play the position.
Obviously Vardy disappears if we move to 4-2-3-1 but so what, it's just tough shit. Unless we're going to play a counterattacking 4-4-2 like Leicester, he shouldn't be in the team. He's a great option to bring on against a tiring defense anyway. Surely he's more useful to the team in a 20 minute burst at the end of a game than toiling out on the left wing, something he's so clearly out of his depth with.

Let's also not forget Rooney's 7 goals in 10 qualifying games for this tournament.
There are far too many reasons not to leave him out.

vardy mardy bum. so, you'd play 3 strikers upfront, of whom: - none are effective wide - none are effective dropping into midfield - none play this formation at club level cool. who would you have in midfield? would assume cashshere, cashlli and cashier?

Qualifying is fairly irrelevant tbh, A significant portion of those qualifiers happened back in 2014. Phil Jones, Rickie Lambert and Fabian Delph played in the first qualifier.
International football with its long breaks between matches should be about picking the right team at the time, based on current form and getting the right formation right.
