This is a terrible film for the sort of people that liked the matrix because they thought it was so damn clever i enjoyed that rant tbh, even though i loved the film, but i gotta respond to that bit, because i don't agree at all. i'd argue that this is the sort of film for people that disliked the matrix precisely because it thought it was so damn clever. inception isn't presented an a pretentious, self-absorbed manner at all imo. it's all fairly typical for a summer blockbuster film imo, albeit an immaculately polished one. there's nothing in the language or character of the film that comes close to the ridiculously pompous sixth form drivel of the architect or all the somewhat embarrassing quasi-religious symbolism surrounding neo in the matrix. as far as i can tell, the only thing that turned the film from an entirely linear sci-fi action film into this so-called intellectual pillar to be struck down was the final shot, which of course called into question the ligitimacy of everything that went before it. fair enough, but two points on that: 1) the film was entirely within its rights to do that, given that its entire premise was that of how vulnerable it is to be unable to tell what is real and not. it'd have been way more surprising if it hadn't, tbh. 2) that exact same question was posed in a far more subtle and ambiguous way in total recall. and that's hardly a film that you'd describe as one for the beard-twiddling, matrix-loving crowd. i suspect it's more the people who rush to over-analyse films like this and declare them as intellectual and important and such that you really hate, because i just don't see the evidence for it in the film myself. the matrix? yep, completely with you, it got lost entirely up its own arse. inception? it's only the reaction to it that is up itself imo. i'd also argue that the lack of character development of everyone apart from leo is beneficial to the film, but that's more a personal preference thing and i completely respect your right to hate that side of the film.

That's probably why it got a loud groan from the cinema I was in. Too predictable. Also, Matrix dicks on Inception.

Yeah, well also how can you develop characters who are just inventions of Leo's subconscious

yeah they could've done, but for me it would've been completely unnecessary. not every film needs to have a whole collection of well-rounded characters imo. this film was only concerned with the inner demons of leo's character, that only his character carried emotional weight was the whole point imo, anything else would have added fat without improving the story much at all. i don't see how a few scenes of juno sitting in her dorm chatting to her housemates about her mental new work-placement would've improved the film one bit.

They're not characters anyway though, they're projections and in a sense they are Leo's character development - in-dream inventions to get him from a to b like any other character in a dream, they should be one dimensional. The only one who shouldn't be and I don't think is is his wife who we know he had a real relationship with.

i think i pretty much agree with you, the only place i would differ is that i honestly don't think it matters how anything that happened in the film is interpreted. all that matters is the central conceit, and for me any character development besides leo's would've undermined that and spoilt the film.
imo the film was so simple and elegant that over-intellectualising the film's plot* to make it seem really clever (it wasn't) is probably what's fueling a fair chunk of karl's rage.
*i'm not saying you're doing that, btw
