I quite like it after my 2nd listen but it's certainly no Virginmarys.

Don't worry Tux one day the world will wake up to the Virginmarys, cult classic not best sellers.

I'd there's less soul, probably more confidence thanks to the success of Lost in the dream. But if you want to be Bryan Adams don't release a 11 minute uncatchy song as a single, he could have done a dozen Red Eyes...

i too was slightly disappointed by war on drugs on first listen, but only because my expectations were so high. based on the tracks we'd heard so far i was expecting an album of the year contender but it doesn't seem to be quite there.
having said that, i do find mahoney's post very odd. the dire straits/bryan adams thing was totally there in lost in the dream and this album is pretty much just that album part 2. that sound is slightly more prominent in a deeper understanding and it is certainly a slightly blander record but i really don't understand how someone could love lost in the dream and not at least like a deeper understanding.
strangest thing is still my song of the year and i think a deeper understanding is still a great album but on first listen it's going to be a top ten contender rather than an album of the year contender for me. hopefully it will be a grower though and i don't think it helped that i listened to it straight after my first listen to the nadine shah album which as i've said a few posts ago is absolutely brilliant.

Really liking this band Goat Girl from Laaandaan Taaan at the moment, signed to Rough Trade they've just released their second single 'Crow Cries'. Saw them a few months back at a little club and felt like a right nonce as the place was full of 18 year old girls, but fair play the crowd were absolutely having it. Loving all four songs released so far, looking forward to the album whenever that is released..

Also I didn't mention it but I'm pretty sure that Adam is either a scientologist or is being inducted into the Illuminati with Bono & The Arcade Fire. It'll be so so dirty to admit to being a War On Drugs fan in a few years time that I felt I should warn you all now.

Tell you what, new Action Brobson is fiiiiiyaaa! Just downloaded this, man he loves Blue Chips don't he Another Hip Hop record I've been enjoying is Don't Call The Brain Police by Darko The Super. Found him on bandcamp, think he's pretty much some unknown white kid who's releasing a shit-ton of records on his own. Isn't perfect by any means but it's short, snappy & a lot of fun. Apparently inspired by Who Are The Brain Police by Frank Zappa too. udontdeservethisbeautifulart.bandcamp.com/album/dont-call-the-brain-police

Pains isn't great. I can't help but still have a soft spot for them but I think it's their worst lp by a fair distance.

I really love the new Cribs record. Could've done without the two slow ballad numbers but the other 8 songs are killer Nirvana-meets-Replacements style tunes which are pretty much the Cribs at their best. Has grown on me lots too.
New Queens Of The Stone Age sounded so tiresome & stale. If it were an Oasis record it'd be Heathen Chemistry.

I feel like the Cribs have been releasing the same song over and over again for 7 years. Not a bad song though.

I haven't really enjoyed an album of theirs for years, although they've always remained a good live band. But i'm really liking this new record, production is great etc.. Yeah, they've never changed much, doubt they ever will, but the exist on their own terms and do their own thing and will probably release a decent album every two or three.
