Crickets for Digsy.
Don't Go Away
Beautiful ballad from Be Here Now, released as a single in Japan, though the (at times quite ridiculous) video was shown elsewhere - it's been suggested that the band's trajectory would have been different (in a positive way) had it been a proper single in the UK and USA. Noel does repeat the "say what you say" from Roll With It, but the arrangement is fine, the vocals are great, and it's a simple universal sentiment - it clearly could have been as big a hit as any of the lesser WTSMG singles, and up there with the other BHN singles. A nice re-stabilisation after the excess of All Around The World. And that middle eight "Me and you - what's going on?" - tidy. Pretty outro. I like the guitar flourishes on the Mustique demo too. 9/10.

digsy's is fine. Was a bit odd to see noel sing it a few years ago. Don't go away is...definitely a song that exists. I've never really thought that much about it beyond being occasionally reminded that it's the only song shorter than 15 minutes on be here now.

Don't Go Away is an absolutely honking piece of mawkish shit. 1/10 There's not much to say about Digsy's Dinner other than it almost certainly should have been a b-side. Great middle 8, nice piano solo, otherwise throwaway. Kev's post made me laugh but I rate Don't Go Away. Unfortunately these days I can't hear it without thinking of the time my mate used THE ENTIRE CHORUS as his MSN display name after his dad had an affair.

Agreed with the b-side comment on Digsy's Dinner, good tune but slightly throwaway compared to the rest of the album.
Don't Go Away is quite shit, really horrendously mainstream sounding. It's partner in crime Stand by Me is a much better song.

digsy's dinner - good silly fun. never going to be a classic but despite sounding so throwaway it's pretty good.
don't go away - sad to see this get a bit of stick on here. this was probably my favourite song of all time from about 1997 to 2002 and is still one of my favourite oasis songs. oasis poncerock 4eva.

Digsy's Dinner - dig it. Fun, short and sweet and I much prefer this to eventual sister She's Electric. It may be throwaway compared to the rest of the album but written in later years it'd be most likely be a single. A chrous written about your best mate.
Don't Go Away - I like the story behind this, written about Bonehead's mum being diagnosed with cancer I think I read. Apparently Bonehead joined up with the band and Noel presented him with this song - more humane moments like this between the lads fill me with joy. The production, however, still annoys me. The lyrics in the chorus are trite but I do really like the lines in the verses. Liam's naturally great vocal saves it although I'm not massively keen on this (or Stand By Me).

Wow, surprised that anyone hates DGA.
Don't Look Back in Anger
What's there to say? An intro that apes Lennon's Imagine but then goes on to sound like nothing else; Noel's first album vocal and single, a bunch of non-sequiturs that somehow come together to sound like the most important thing you've heard in ages. The layered guitars are amazing when you actually just sit down and listen to them through good headphones (I suggest Sennheisers). And that drum fill! Imagine this without Alan White! Great video too. One of my absolute favourite songs of all time - 10/10.

I don't hate it.
DLBIA is obviously a classic even though not a favourite of mine - guess I've heard it too much. In fact my favorite version of this is the semi-acoustic one (I think) live on Japanese TV with Gem and Terry Kirkbride. I won't post a link. It's a beautiful set with a gentler vocal but still as euphoric. Just nice hearing a tune like that without the topless white van man in attendence tbf.

D'yer wanna be a spaceman
Shakermaker b-side from 1994, Noel-sung acoustic reminiscence, touching on the usual Noel themes of getting older and escaping from home. Quite a pretty treatment, effortless vocals, no verse repetition. 6/10

DLBIA almost doesn't even seem like an Oasis song, it went past that and into British national anthem territory. Yeah it's a classic and technically I 'like' it but it's not something i'd ever listen to unless I was absolutely wasted and wanted to invoke a guaranteed singalong. It's even gone past being evocative of it's time as it's still played quite a lot.
D'yer wanna be a spaceman - one of my fave Oasis songs, I find it absolutely beautiful, the melancholic vocals and lyrics, that lovely soft lead guitar, the general lofi sound of it. Awesome. Lino once again proving he's got shit taste in Oasis songs.

Spaceman is super sweet. Wasn't it always denied it's Liam on backing vocals? It most definitely is Do you still feel like me? The vocal melody on this line is as good as anything Noel wrote.

Christ, two good Noel-sung songs in a row. Does that happen anywhere else in their back catalogue?
Don't Look Back in Anger has probably suffered from being overplayed more than any of the other WTSMG singles. I feel almost inoculated to it now, but when I think back to 1995/6 and hearing it for the first time (before I was even willing to admit I liked Oasis) it was one of the most exciting things I'd heard. It still has a great balance of a euphoric melody with quite melancholic lyrics, and despite suffering from an overly compressed mix, there are quite a few nice touches in the production/arrangement, like the lead guitar doing a response to the "rock and roll band" line in the second verse. It's a perfect recording of a really good song but I'd tired of it always being in the encore by the time I got round to seeing Oasis on a semi-regular basis. Unfortunately it's probably also what gave Noel the idea that he was a lead singer, rather than it being an exceptional Ringo moment. I thought Liam pulled it off well at Glastonbury, incidentally.
D'yer Wanna Be a Spaceman is another of those early b-sides where the band's relative innocence comes through, and I've always really liked it. Does anyone remember The Coral's cover from a few years back? That was great too.

D'you know what I mean?
Confession mode: this song and video is what made me an Oasis fan.
The song still gets to me and the video is one of the coolest things ever. The morse code, the choppers, the miming to backwards vocals as if they're pronouncable - it's all amazing.
Classic lines - "sun in the sky never raised an eye to me", "I ain't good looking but I'm someone's child; no one can give me the air that's mine to breathe", "I don't really care for what you believe, so open up your fist or you won't receive the thoughts and the words of every man you'll need", and of course that bridge, basically recounting meeting God and telling Him "Oasis are bigger that you; get lost".
It's a call to arms, it's defiance, it's arrogance, it's confidence. Just a glorious track that is worthy of its length.
No doubt about it, 10/10
