he seems like a lovely, genuine chap but this was a bit cringey. so i take it he has never paid a transfer fee for a player? and didn't he walk out of plymouth to go to leicester? is he suggesting that players should effectively be slaves? fergies minions are quite nauseating sometimes.

www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Wayne-Rooney-Manchester-United-U-turn-Sir-Alex-Ferguson-has-met-with-agent-Paul-Stretford-for-talks-about-a-new-contract-for-the-player-article609537.htmlWayne Rooney was last night fighting to salvage his Manchester United career after a day of crisis talks at Old Trafford. After insisting he wanted to quit, Rooney's agent Paul Stretford was persuaded to enter talks with Sir Alex Ferguson and United chief executive David Gill, aimed at resolving the striker's future. In what amounted to a softening of the Rooney camp's stance by listening to United, Stretford was told there was still a way back for his client, despite his explosive statement accusing the club of a lack of ambition. United boss Fergie met with Gill at Old Trafford at midday, before Stretford was brought into the discussions with a view to assessing whether any kind of compromise deal could be reached with Rooney. Only 24 hours earlier, Fergie had promised to "put the matter to bed", admitting the ongoing saga of Rooney's future had become an unwanted distraction and one that had to be sorted out. But such is United's willingness to hold on to Rooney, despite his incendiary comments which have caused outrage among his team-mates, Fergie and Gill have made one last-ditch attempt to keep him. Fergie is said to have repeated his belief that Rooney would be making the biggest mistake of his career were he to quit United, while Gill re-iterated the club were willing to make the 24-year-old the highest-paid player in their history on £160,000-a-week. United view getting Stretford back around the table for talks as a significant - if not conclusive - step, given that Rooney and his influential agent were adamant 72 hours ago that there was no further room for negotiation. It is understood Rooney's demands for assurances over transfer spending, as well as how much longer Fergie intends to stay at United, were on the agenda, although no definitive conclusion was reached. With United desperate to avoid the saga dragging on and having a negative effect on the morale of their squad, they are keen to resolve the issue one way or the other before Sunday's game at Stoke. The statement released by United said: "We are aware that there is intense public and media interest on the club at the moment, but there are no developments of note to report. "We can confirm a number of meetings have taken place, including with the player's representative. The outcome of those meetings will become clear in the near future. In the meantime, fans are asked to be patient."

If he does end up staying he'll have to contribute a fuck load before he stops getting boo'd by the fans, I'd think. Single-handedly winning the treble should do.

Wayne Rooney has agreed a five-year contract to stay at Manchester United, the club has confirmed.
Describing it as "good news", a statement on the club's website said the deal follows "intensive discussions".
Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It's been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United. I said to the boy that the door is always open and I’m delighted Wayne has agreed to stay.
"Sometimes, when you’re in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is.
"I'm pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United's great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for.
"I'm sure everyone involved with the Club will now get behind Wayne and show him the support he needs to produce the performances we know he is capable of."
Rooney said: "I'm delighted to sign another deal at United.
"In the last couple of days, I've talked to the manager and the owners and they’ve convinced me this is where I belong.
"I said on Wednesday the Manager’s a genius and it’s his belief and support that have convinced me to stay."
