1. Machu Picchu - Everyone agrees: them, critics and fans. This is how they wanted to sound and here it's as successful as it gets. Funky guitars, great turnings brilliantly ensambled. 9/10 2. Under Cover of Darkness - Classical Strokes but happier and poppier. Love everything of it, great comeback. 9/10 3. Two Kinds of Happiness - Starting to grow on me, still haven't made my mind at all. 7/10 4. You're so Right - Can't get the backing vocals out of my head, but yeah, it's still quite shit. 4/10 5. Taken For a Fool - Another prove of progression in sound while mantaining an unavoidable Strokes print and making it work. 8.5/10 6. Games - This was a challenge I reckon, sounds nothing like them (although it would fit Phrazes) and could open a new stylish field. Love the first minute of it but then it doesn't progress too much. The highest vocals bit annoys me, and they could easily insert BSP's Remember Me at the end. 7/10 7. Call Me Back - As Mahoney said this could be the next single Nah, just a nice harmless song with a weird part, it achieves its objectives. 7/10 8. Gratisfaction - Joyful, catchy, dancey, lovely, Thin Lizzy. And that without being cheesy. Hope I never get tired of it. 9/10 9. Metabolism - Sounds like Muse to me, dig the solo. 6/10 10. Life's Simple in the Moonlight - Loved it since I heard it on SNL, it stresses a bittersweet vibe present in some early songs that I can't resist. Just think the production could be better, with the guitars higher in the mix. 9/10 Overall it seems I'm enjoying it more than what I initially thought, although being a fanboy probably helps. At first it was a little deceiving but the truth is the songs I like are growing and growing (and growing a little more), and the rest of it is settling down without disturbing. I'm happy with it

it's quite funny- the album has been roundly panned on the libs forum and roundly approved on here
i wonder how it'll be received in the press?

i don't think it's been roundly approved on here, has it? has it not? gotta be honest i've not read every page, but the last few seem pretty positive personally i've only listened through once, and it wasn't enough to make me want to listen again- but with so many saying it's grown on them, i'll give it another couple of runs through

So not a big trioumph here either.

This is the cream of the forum crop. It doesn't get no bigger. .Org has a couple of lookers and that's it. If that place was any kop Wintersox would have popped in by now.

This album starts off really good and then goes downhill. Best 2 tracks are the first 2. Listened to this 10 times or so and meh. This is the best they could come up with? Keep seeing people post that same sayying on lastfm and what not on other forums.
Listening to this is like bad b-sides from Julian's solo stuff.
Also maybe I liked FIOE more than I thought cause it blows this album out of the water. Peace....

"nice album closer" is not a 9 and "good but not great" is not an 8, mr grotesque. please remark accordingly whilst the album is disappointing, under cover of darkness is all sorts of brilliant. makes me so happy. I am sincerely sorry "mr. monkeytennis" 01 Machu Picchu 9 great opener 02 Under Cover of Darkness 9 great lead single 03 Two Kinds Of Happiness8 sounds so 80s to me not bad though 04 You're So Right 6 Strokes going Radiohead, so-so 05 Taken for a Fool 9 favorite at the moment 06 Games7 i like the verses and the "empty world" part, but u expect more to come..... 07 Call Me Back 5 this albums "ask me anything"!?! interesting in parts, shit alltogether 08 Gratisfaction 7 what song is the melody in the very beginning from?? the whole song sounds like its stolen from a handful hits all mixed together..good but not great 09 Metabolism 7 hmmm,..not sure bout this one, dont like when Julian drags the tones that much, i know its the melody of the song,..doesnt suit his voice too much imo 10 Life is Simple in the Moonlight 8 nice album closer, nice melodies, classic Strokes 7/10 hope the stinkers grow on me Read more: asoapbox.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=music&action=display&thread=966&page=19#ixzz1GfpvjlCd

it's a solid 8/10 for me right now. Taken For A Fool is great! I can't say I hate any song on it.

a real mixed bag
Good:
'under the cover of darkness' has grown on me, and actually sounds pretty great through good headphones 7/10
'taken for a fool' short, sharp and sweet- feels to me more like the strokes of old- probably my favourite on the album 8.5/10
'games' has the chorus that's lingered in my head most 7/10
'call me back'- when that little twee vocal harmony kicked in, I first thought WTF? but it works....nice little song 7/10
Bad:
‘two kinds of happiness’- horrible early/mid 80’s sound and nauseous guitar solo 5/10
‘you’re so right’- complete waste of time 3/10
‘gratisfaction’- like a cross between a bad boomtown rats song and 80’s MOR soft rock 4/10
‘metabolism’- a weird juicebox/Muse hybrid 5/10
Indifferent;
‘Machu Picchu’- it’s the most catchy and immediate, and I like the guitar hook just after the vocal bitof the chorus- but after 4 listens I’m bored already 6/10
Not Sure:
‘Life is simple in the moonlight’ – difficult to listen to verse, but catchy chorus
5/10 or 7/10 dunno yet
whole album 6.5/10
