Quality mixtape, Barny. Really enjoyed most of it. Will have to d/l a record of Anna Calvi's, as i really liked both the track you selected, and the one Ben had in his. I can see the PJ Harvey comparisons Already had the Fleet Foxes and Replacements tunes, but was great to hear em again in this setting. Quality tune by The Vines, too. Is it a new 'un? I lost interest in them after the shitty second album, but was surprised at this tune. I've still got time for (most of) the debut Overall, i enjoyed it mucho. And there's a couple artists/bands i will deffo be seeking out more from. Nice one, cheers m8 Also listened to Ton's today. Some very good tracks in there too. One Grain Of Sand even recieved a whopping 5 STARS on my iPod. Wizz Jones can retire on that! Would be nice to read a few more comments and thoughts from everyone on all these mixtapes tbh, instead of just the ones made for you. Might make this great thread last longer too. So when's the second draw? The Vines song is from their latest record, probably the worst album I have ever heard. Still they manage to create some golden work here and there, so I keep on trying Pleased with your mixtape too, after three listens or so. The only song I knew from this lot was the Veronica Fall's one, also waiting for their debut. Have downloaded the new Art Brut and The Moons records but never listened to them yet. Overall it's a satisfying and mostly uplifting mixtape, good for the summer isn't it? The highlights being Don't Say Oh Well and The Highs & Lows. I've checked that GROUPLOVE EP but it doesn't really move me a lot. Great opener and closer too. I'd like to find time to check the other tapes but I don't think I will tbh Cheers me 'ol sugarlump! Jan and Stocky mixes were all up in my ears a couple days ago. Gud stuff. Up for making another one. Anyone want one fresh from my musky caravan?

ok so heres my initial thoughts on kps compilation for me...
johnny osborne - yeah good shit. not listened to him before so will check something out.
holly golightly - knew this from broken flowers soundtrack but shes one of those artists whose name i always see about but ive never really been arsed to check out properly. this song was alright but not really made me want to check out anything more still
guided by voices - yeah youre right im a huge fan but for whatever reason isolation drills is an album that ive not checked out so far. great tune so will have to resolve that at some point.
videogame orchestra - bit of fun for the compilation and i do find chiptunes stuff quite clever but not really the sort of thing i can see myself giving repeated listens to.
lee hazlewood - am quite the fan of his and was thinking just the other day that i needed to check some more of his albums at and hazlewoodism was one of the ones i was reading about but havent checked out yet. this tune is excellent and i will get the album asap.
frank black - bizarrely enough despite being a big pixies fan ive never checked out any of frank blacks solo stuff. if this is a good indication of it though then ive been missing out. good stuff.
love - pretty sure i had this album downloaded years and years ago but certainly havent given it much attention in the past 5 years. obviously not as good as classic love but yeah certainly not worthy of being overlooked like it generally tends to be. will check out the album.
eels - yeah been finally getting into these properly this year. think id been put off this album due to the size of it but this tune is nice.
ennio morricone - YEAH IVE NOT WATCHED GOOD BAD UGLY YET, will do soon. nice song x
acid casuals - was having a big welsh music phase a few months ago so coulda done with this then. sounds promising so would like to hear more.
bs200 - think i downloaded this album years ago after you reccommended it. probably only listened to it the once thought it was ok then never touched it again. i do remember this song quite clearly though as its an obvious standout. maybe i should give the album another spin too.
smudge - really have no idea why ive never checked these out before as i like lemonheads a lot. defintiely preferred divan to the other tune. overall though a little disappointing. will still check out the lps at some point but not in a huge rush still.
captain beefheart - similar to guided by voices in that its an artist im very familiar with but for some reason havent checked out the album this track is from. this is really fucking good though so will get on it.
el goodo - nice tune but i dunno, dont really feel compelled to delve further with them right now.
kevin burgess - neil young ripoff, needs to get some of his own ideas. nah this is fucking good aint it. thumbs up kev. still no millie wanted for nothing though is it.
the exploding hearts - weird as ive read so much about this album but still never checked it out. think i listened to some songs of theirs on youtube a few years back but obviously wasnt overly impressed as i didnt download the lp. again from this song it sounds catchy and fun but not something id be in a rush to listen to more of. really will get this lp though as so many people heap high praise on it it must be worth checking out.
so yeah cheers bruv, pretty much all good shit on here and has signposted me to some lps i must check out. SUCCESS.

Ok, here's my track by track review for Phieniac's mixtape. He obviously put some effort in variety, as this collection goes from straight 60s pop songwriting to ska, blues and even (alas!) discosoul. I appreciate that, but the problem I have with a too eccentric and varied taste is that i always start to ask myself how the listeners can like things so in opposition such as discosoul and rural blues. Anyway, I tried to listen to the songs with Phieniac's track by track under my nose so I could understand a bit more his angle on the songs.
Toro Y Moi - Intro Chi Chi Ok, this is an intro and it has a very nice pulsating gait and nice guitars, I like it.
Syket - Let It Heal This starts off with a nice guitar, beat and horns and it shapes up as it could be a Doves song, but it falls flat very soon. See, the problem I have with this kind of music is that, despite the pumping drums, it never takes off. The voice and the phrasing is also very cold and square which strengthens this idea of flatness I get for the whole song.
Bill Laswell - Lost Roads I liked it, although I could never consider an instrumental song like this as "great". It's pleasant and everything but to me it's pure background music. I liked it though.
Joe Gibbs - Africa Dub Chapter Three Again, this is great, but it falls in the same category of the previous song: great soundtrack to a party or a walk or whatever, but definitely not the kind of music that I put on when I want to focus on the music. Still, one of the best off this mix.
The Jaynetts - Sally Go Round The Roses Aye, this is a classic I know, but to me it's one of those huge early-60s hit singles that has aged the worst. Still good though.
Suicide - Mr. Ray I have no words to explain how much I disliked this track. I am sorry and I'd like to know why do you like it so much (beside the beat, which hardly can be a track's highlight) Phieniac.
Prince Far I - Low Gravity Again, don't wanna sound picky, but this track defines the word "void". A couple of scratched guitars over a drum beat and a simple, walking bass line. That is. Can't see what you like about it. It's a good track for a DVD Menu background music, but definitely not a "song"!
Link Wray - The Fuzz This is a great track with the Wray signature all over it. The guitar sound, the odd rhythm, it's all there. The time signature on this is awesome. Only that by this time, I'm starting to wonder why a good half of Phieniac's mix is FUCKING INSTRUMENTALS. Are you voice-o-phobic or what?!?
The Skatalites - Lucky Seven Geez, that's a semi-instrumental, semi-grunts song. It is AWFUL. I wonder what masochistic human being can listen to something like this on daily basis. It frustrates you to a point that every single grunt is an irreversible injection of anxiety.
Sam & Dave - Hold On! I'm Comin' Great song. The horn section on this is mindblowing, it literally elevates the song.
Albert King - Crosscut Saw That's a standard blues with an awesome guitar work behind it. But again, it's just guitar work, so if you approach it from a "ehi I wanna hear some passionate guitar playing" it's fantastic, otherwise it's just the same old blues.
George Mcrae - Rock Your Baby Fuck off Phieniac. If Bobby Gillespie wouldn't have mentioned this song, you would have laughed at something like this. Horrible song.
Dion - Born To Be With You I agree with Phieniac's description. It definitely has that desperate vibe to it, both in Dion's voice and the sax solo, Spector's touch is world class on this one.
The Delfonics - Didn't I Blow Your Mind I've listened to it a lot to find an angle to approach this song, and yet I can't. I'm not a fan of smooth soul (or whatever they call it) and for me these songs never hit the point. Guess it's good if you want to do a 60s soul mix, but nowdays it has lost a lot of its power.
That said, I really tried, but Phieniac's inclination for instrumental songs and his too eccentric taste (which, truth to be told, seems a bit random and with not much criteria, quality speaking) have prevented me from enjoying this mix. Of course I don't mean to sound harsh, I've judged this songs according to my taste after multiple listens. I hope Phieniac has enjoyed my mix more than I enjoyed his.

I need to do the full review of yours as well. What I can say is that when some of the tracks pop up on shuffle on the ol' iPod, they make for nice surprises.
