By the time I die my entire music collection will be inserted into an almost invisible chip into my eye lid which will be controlled by my soul.
I'll be listening to Redemption Song from the B-side of Guiding Star by Cast for eternity.

I don't think they will have that kind of technology next year.

One more point about the WHEN WE WERE LITTLE THING.
Almost all the records I listened to again & again when I first got into music now I can't listen to on a regular basis because I'm pretty much bored with them. I can guarantee as much as I'm loving that new Arctic Monkey's LP if I listened to it 30 times this year I'd never want to hear it again.
Guess that is down to peoples personal tastes. Sandman has a prolific listening taste, he can hear the same record 40 times in one week. If I did that I'd probably fucking hate the record for eternity.
Variety is the spice of life.

Think there is alot of nostalgia going on in this thread too. The reason why the majority of us listened to the same 10 cd's 3,000 times in the 90's was 1. We were young & didn't have the money to spunk on CD's & couldn't steal from the net & most importantly 2. Most of us only listened to Britpop. Once you'd been through all the Shed 7 & Cast records what else was there? Speak for yourself, I had Green Day's Dookie and THREE Aerosmith albums I wouldn't wanna go back to those times either, but I do find it a shame that nowadays (some, certainly not all. And mainly kids)) people will only give an album a fleeting listen, for reasons already pointed oot. I wish things stuck aboot a bit longer before slipping off the radar. I'd hate to be in a band these days, as its all some mad frantic race to find the next thing, rather than truly rinsing every drop of quality out of something before putting it on the shelf/ignoring it on iTunes and moving on. The internet has done more good than 'bad' overall, in so many different areas. Bringing people from different countries and cultures together being the best for me. Being able to discuss the latest Cerys Matthews b-side with a Mexican within seconds is magic. So nah, i certainly wouldn't wanna go back to 1994 either, and i don't think the internet has ruined music. I just wish things hung about a bit longer, and people gave things more chances. And if all women could have massive jabbas, that'd be gr8 too.

On the other hand, a fleeting listen is more than most records would have had back in the old days. Since Spotify, I've been listening to a lot more stuff than I used to. If I feel there's nothing in a record for me, I won't bother again that's true. But when I go to the record store and listen to a CD there, it's exactly the same thing. The Internet allows discovery and even serendipity.

A cool use of the word serendipity Chuz. I don't think I've ever seen it on the soapbox before.
I think we should have a underrated word of the day thread.

I've never heard it before. Thats the problem these days, there are so many new words on the internet I can't give them all enough attention. Back in 96 we only had 12 words and that included Gazza, naff and mingmong. Great days.

Yeah, that's a good point too The best thing the internet has done for music IMO is create an avenue where i can steal EVERY B-SIDE FROM EVERY DECENT BAND EVER Its amazing, but when i was 14/15 and listened to CDs of Oasis in my bedroom, i genuinely thought i might be the biggest fan in the world. Then the internet came along, and i saw how wrong i was The internet arriving was like when Dorothy arrives in OZ and everything goes from black n white to colour. Was amazingly eye-opening for me when i first got it. Still is, frankly

The new kids thing worries me, but the truth I'm a grumpy weirdo who thinks humanity is going downhill and should disappear soon.
What really annoys me is the attitude from some friends, the ones with who I discovered all the bands that have became mythical in our eyes, but don't seem to care anymore. They just complain cos they don't know many of the bands on Benicassim, but they're not arsed to check them out. Maybe they listen to two songs from a band and that's it. I mean, I can't blame them for not living music like me, but it's frustrating.
Some of my favourite bands/records I hated firstly, but the process of "growing on" was priceless. As nowadays you have a dizzying amount of different options, it's easier to discard records you could potentially love as well as discovering a band with 4 members born in 4 different decades, with a black frontman possessed by the son Mick Jagger and Captain Beefheart never had and with 10 fans around the world.
Which is exactly what everyone's saying here, but hey...

I know what you mean about the mates "giving up" thing, Barnoid. One of my oldest and best mates is a great bloke and we've always liked the same sorta stuff and would always get each other into different things. But then he got married a while back, and i've noticed it's now more me recommending him stuff. Which is fair enough, he's got other priorities these days, but it has gone very one-way now. The nice thing is, he does still check out most things i mention to him. Though its mainly comedy and telly stuff these days. And he tends to like most of it, so all is not lost I do miss having him recommending me stuff though. The internet is great for that kind of thing, but text on a screen simply isn't as enticing as having your oldest mate telling you to check out something. OH GOD, WHY CANT IT BE 1994 AGAIN? WHYYYYYY?!?!??!!?Heh joke, no way would i wanna go back there. I have a cactus now
