just had my first listen of the beck album.
i liked the wow single and was looking forward to beck returning to a more upbeat sound. i must admit i thought mahoney must have been overeacting but having listened to this it really is fucking horrible.
i'd go as far to say it's the worst album i've listened to all year.

Yeah, just had my first full listen through yesterday and although it isn't as atrocious as I was expecting, given that all the singles were total bobbins, it's a completely forgettable album. There are no dynamics or genuine hooks at all, it almost sounds like one long song. He's definitely made a conscious play for the mainstream with this one. You can't get on mainstream radio these days without your record being strained of all its life through the oppressive application of compression, which is exactly what this feels like.
Keep seeing people defending it by saying 'he's just having fun' or 'it's just a fun pop record' or anything along similar lines, well that's not a good enough excuse for me. In contrast this is clearly not him 'having fun' because it took him fucking years to get right and now he's being forced out on tour with U2 or pandering to critics by playing tiny 'guerrilla' gigs in TCOTU and filling them with press. I don't like it.

Yeah the "It's a pop record" thing really pisses me off. It's not like he's made Let's Dance, he's made something on the level of Never Let Me Down or Tonight, a soulless waste of space.
& JP, how dare you doubt me!

Catholic Action's debut is decent but massively overproduced in places. I'm used to their rawer live sound for most of the songs so it'll probably take me a few listens to get used to it.

Another superb hip young guitar band that Old Man Mahoney will dismiss.

Check out 'Breakfast' by Catholic Action, barn! I'm sure you'll find it mediocre at best but it is really rather good.

Yeah, I'm enjoying the King Krule record as well, perhaps it's a little too long as I think it loses some traction in a couple of places, there's some 'noodling' in a few places that I think it could do without, but apart from that, I like it.
Been loving a record Karl recommended to me recently, band are called Duds and the record is called 'Of a Nature or Degree'. They're a post punk band from Manchester but have released this record under Jonathan Dwyer's (The Oh Sees) Castle Face label. It's very spindly and spikey post punk sound, the album is 23 minutes long, remind me a bit of Josef K. Worth a little listen.

I've been keeping an eye on these since you and Chrissie have been going on about them. I think they have some decent songs but as you say, the production lets it down. It's very MTV2 2005. They'd be massive back then. But for now, I just can't get past it more than a few cursory listens to the decent songs.
