Anyone for the new Eels track? I'm such a recluse/country buff nowadays that I rarely go to gigs but was very tempted by Everett playing in Manchester in a couple of months. However, despite the new tune being very good, I genuinely wouldn't survive the Scooby Doo nod when played live Fucks sake But, tune and video.

I’ve had a couple of listens to the new Eels record and I like it. It’s probably his best since end times. Tho having said that I think E’s songwriting formula has become a little stale. The slower numbers have lost their emotional punch, I guess when you’ve wrote so many songs regarding similar subjects, using the same few chords it can feel a little sterile.
I think he’d have to seriously shake up his approach to make a great eels album again, but still it’s mother fucking E so I can’t help but enjoy the record

You're right lads but when all you have is your shack and a former dog (RIP) then I guess lyrics prove to be difficult to write. He basically said everything in Things The Grandchildren Should Know anyway. I'd seriously hope that was played at Bobby Jr's funeral by E on acoustic.

Oh I heard E's Broken Toy Shop for the first time recently but didn't enjoy it much - I felt it sounded like Daisies Of The Galaxy but without the same greatness in the tunes. I know you two are big Eels fans, so thoughts? I felt it all sounded a bit too nice, which is fine with some bite or melancholy, but it didn't hit any of those spots. I had to stick on Roman Candle straight after, true story.

I did just listen to his debut which was ok with a bit shabby 80s production and a couple highlights. Never followed to that one for some reason. I think I got an overdose of him as I went through all his previous records (plus book, documentaries and live releases) in a few weeks in 2010-2011. Also everything he has released since has been a bit subpar. I still love him but the spark has waned a little.

Not another one calling music lovely i'm trying to find the non-cynical rationale for this and i'm drawing a blank not to get too boringly literal on this, but what is your boggle with referring to music as lovely?

New Kali Uchis album out today and it seems fucking lovely Yeah, had a quick listen through earlier, liked it. it's there with A.A.L. and U.S. Girls as my favourite album this year. She has such an effortless charisma and ability to switch between styles, it's no wonder that so many writers and producers want to work with her. 15 songs on the album (and it doesn't seem a second too long), all of which are different but all have her owning her vibe perfectly. it's a fucking joy to listen to.

I didn't even see this initially, but what I said about Broken Toy Shop would sum up my feelings on this matter. Lovely music is fine with some despair, melancholy or intensity throw in. Unfortunately Coldplay's music, for example, is none of this, it's just lovely, thus shit. I consider Travis the worst band for this.
Time to pick a flaw with my argument - Joanna Newsom. Possibly just lovely but haunting enough to break the rulebook.

I guess being a typical hack I'm just in the market for big sound bites. Non-lovely sound bites. I want to see forum members describe records as so intense they crumpled in the street or got sacked for tipping over their desk.
